The scaffolding is understood to have toppled inside a building at a construction site on East Morehead Street, Dilworth, CBS17 reports.

Reports claim a wall then fell on the victims below, although this has not been confirmed.

Addressing members of the media this afternoon, Charlotte Fire Department Capt. Jackie Gilmore, said: "When firefighters arrived on scene we had scaffolding that had collapsed and we had workers that had fallen from the scaffolding.

"Unfortunately we had three workers pronounced deceased on scene.

"Firefighters were able to access two additional workers and render first aid.

"Those patients were turned over with minor injuries."

While Capt. Gilmore confirmed the workers had fallen from a height of about 70ft, he declined to speculate on what had happened inside the building.

He said the incident is being investigated by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
