He selected Duke University for his undergraduate studies, where he transitioned from shooting guard to point guard towards the conclusion of the 2008–09 season and was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament. In his senior season as captain of the Duke Blue Devils in 2009–10, he guided the team to ACC regular season and tournament titles, as well as the NCAA National Championship game. He was the most productive player on the championship squad in terms of points per game, assists, free throw percentage, and steals per contest. The 2010 consensus All-American (Second Team) was selected by his peers, and he was also chosen to the 2009–10 All-ACC First Team. He was also named to the 2010 ACC All-Tournament First Team.

He also owns the Duke record most points scored off the bench in a game (27), and he has the third-longest run of consecutive free throws in Duke history (40). The 2010 NBA Draft did not include him, but he was invited to the Los Angeles Clippers training camp but was waived when the team was reduced to its final roster. In 2011, he played shooting guard for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA D-League, and he was named to the All-NBA First Team in 2012.
