SINCE the start of the new year, countless lives have been lost due to senseless gun violence.

Here we take a look at all the mass shootings that have taken place in 2023 so far.

How many mass shootings have taken place in 2023?

A mass shooting is defined by the Gun Violence Archive as one in which at least four people are shot, according to CNN.

Since the start of 2023, the United States has seen over 450 mass shootings.

The shootings have outraged Americans and sparked fear in communities across the nation.

President Joe Biden has spoken out about the issue several times and has urged Congress to pass legislation, however, he now considers himself powerless in the fight due to a lack of support from the Republican Party.

“I have gone the full extent of my executive authority to do, on my own, anything about guns,” Biden told reporters in March 2023, via The New York Times.

“The Congress has to act," he continued.

"The majority of the American people think having assault weapons is bizarre; it’s a crazy idea. They’re against that. And so, I think the Congress should be passing the assault weapons ban.

“I can’t do anything except plead with the Congress to act reasonably," he added.

Among the Republican members who have not shown their support for gun reform is Tennessee Representative Tim Burchett, who said he sees no “real role” that Congress can play.

“We’re not going to fix it,” he said, via The New York Times. “Criminals are going to be criminals.”

South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds had similar views and explained that he believes Congress has done all it can.

“When we start talking about bans or challenging the Second Amendment, the things that have already been done have gone about as far as we’re going with gun control,” Rounds told CNN, via The Times.

In 2022, Congress passed a bipartisan compromise that enhanced background checks on buyers under the age of 21, however, that was the first major gun control legislation passed in decades, The Times notes.

Biden has been urging Congress to pass two bills that are seeking to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

What is the deadliest mass shooting in US history?

Within the past decade, the number of mass shootings has increased substantially.

For example, in 2014, there were 273 mass shootings but by 2022, that number had more than doubled to a total of 647 mass shootings, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive.

During that time, some of the deadliest mass shootings in history occurred.

To date, the deadliest mass shooting, according to Statista, happened in October 2017.

At the time, 58 people were killed and another 546 were injured in what is known as the Las Vegas Strip massacre.
