Eddie Muller is a writer living in San Francisco who, according to his website, is a second-generation San Franciscan. He is well-known for his cinema-related works, especially film noir. Muller is a noir specialist and the founder and president of the Film Noir Foundation, as well as co-programmer of the San Francisco Noir City film festival. He is often asked to write and speak on the genre, most notably on witty commentary tracks for Fox’s film noir series of DVDs. He’s been called “The Czar of Noir” by novelist James Ellroy. In the late 1970s, Muller studied at the San Francisco Art Institute under director George Kuchar. Muller is the son of the same-named famous San Francisco boxing journalist, who he based the character of Billy Nichols in his period crime book The Distance, which won the Private Eye Writers of America’s Best First Novel Award in 2002. In the 2003 book Shadow Boxer, Billy Nichols reappears.
