Denise “Dee” Barnes, better known by her stage name D Zire, is an American rapper and former television personality. She was a member of the West Coast hip hop female duet Body & Soul and had an important radio programme on KDAY before becoming well-known as the presenter of Fox’s hip hop show Pump It Up! Body & Soul’s first single “Dance To The Drummer’s Beat,” released in 1989 on the Delicious Vinyl label in Los Angeles, extensively sampled the song of the same name by Herman Kelly and Life. Def Jef produced the song’s b-side, “Hi-Powered.” The following year, Def Jef released another tune, “We Can Do This,” on the label showcase This Is Delicious – Eat To The Beat. Body & Soul’s best recording would seem to be their last one, as part of the Dr. Dre-produced West Coast Rap All-Stars and their Grammy-nominated posse cut “We’re All in the Same Gang” from 1990. Barnes presented Sisters in the Name of Rap, a hip-hop programme filmed at the Ritz in New York in 1992.
