AT&T down updates — 'Cause' of national outage revealed with network restored for all users as company apologizes

Police departments impacted by nationwide outage

Americans have been unable to contact 911 this morning as AT&T suffers a nationwide outage.

However, you can still contact most police departments via a landline.

The Fairfax County Goverment Twitter page said: "There is a nationwide AT&T outage that is preventing wireless customers from making and receiving any phone calls (including to 9-1-1). The Fairfax County 911 center is still operational. Try calling from a landline or ask a friend or family member to call 9-1-1 on your behalf."

What is the problem with AT&T?

Not much is known about the specific problem facing a number of US networks this morning.

AT&T customers have said their cell phones are stuck in SOS mode.

While others have simply said they have no signal.

Outage impacting emergency services

In San Francisco, some AT&T customers have struggled to reach 911 services, per the city's Fire Department.

Those who cannot get through to emergency services via cell phone have been urged to use a landline.

Americans have been urged not to call 911 solely to test their cell phone service.

"We are actively engaged and monitoring this," The San Francisco Fire Department said.

What has AT&T said?

So far, AT&T has not commented on today's outage.

Taking to X, users have raged over their lack of service.

One wrote: "When you paid your phone bill this month but have no service….."

While another added: "We pay too much money to not have no service FOR SEVERAL HOURS at a time."
